Bed & Breakfast by the coast of Hualien- My Dream
Everyone has their childhood memories. I was a real rascal as a kid.
Next door to our house was a famous local movie theater, and I used to sneak other kids to the movies from the second floor of our house. Everyday after school, I would catch fish as I go home along the Ming-yi canal, and everyday my mom would send people out to look for her missing girl. There was one Chinese New Year, me and some kids across the streets were throwing firecrackers at each other, and it ended up in some stranger’s cloths, and of course he chased us. In the earlier days of Hualien, there was this lady who would freak out whenever she sees anyone in red cloths, and my mom would always put me in red. Being naughty myself, and kids loving to play around her, the banyan in front of our house became my place of refuge.
After I got a little older, I couldn’t resist the ocean’s charm, I brought my dog with me all the time, I used to throw stones at the sea, get chased by the waves. Typhoons didn’t stop me from wanting to go to the seaside. Come to think of it, the storms were pretty scary!
Back in junior high school, when our school bus was headed for my home, I would get off halfway and chase the sunset. My passion for the ocean became my drive to settle by the sea.
Then I met my husband, who also had his father running behind him all the time, lucky for me! He said “Hualien is as beautiful as anywhere else in the world.” I guess he is one of the reasons I still get into trouble in my middle age.
I took over a restaurant without knowing how to cook. The cook stood me up on our opening day, and the rice turned into porridge. Fortunately Hai-chuan’s ocean view was so beautiful, the costumers didn’t mind.
Twelve years just went by like that with our restaurant; I’m not even sure whether or not we’ve accomplished anything. I just did it so that nothing would get in the way between the ocean and our window. With the help from fiends, we purchased the open ground next door, and do what? I didn’t have a clue. “Build a bed & breakfast place.” a friend of mine said, and I thought “oh, okay.” The blue print was this little piece of paper, it wasn’t till the building was fully constructed did I found out what I’d got myself into! This is the way of “Ku Hui-chu of the Hai-chuan Bed & Breakfast”, it’s a way of life.
My worried husband keeps on begging me not to get into trouble. But hey, I don’t know, maybe I’ll be ready for some more trouble someday!
